1 Overview
Since its inception in 1998, the Department of Urology of the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of the Zhejiang University School of Medicine became one of the largest urological departments in Zhejiang Province. With a staff consisting of 17 experienced urologists, more than 1800 operations are performed annually. The urologists of the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine have special expertise in various complicated operations, including open operations such as the radical nephrectomy and cystectomy. Additionally, the Department performs endo-urological operations such as the transuretheral resection of prostate, ureteroscopic lithotripsy with holmium laser, minimal invasive percutaneous nephrolithotripsy. Laparoscopic operations, such as the laparoscopic adrenectomy, radical nephrectomy and prostatectomy, have demonstrated good performance safely and with satisfactory outcomes. The urologists practice in a research-oriented environment and unceasingly pursue improvement through careful analysis of their large-volume surgical data. They are involved in many clinical trials to evaluate new approaches for kidney, bladder and prostate diseases.
2 Service
The experienced and trained faculty engage in clinical research, conduct clinical trials and perform scientific research. All of them have published manuscripts in peer-reviewed surgical literature. Currently, 10 faculty members hold the academic title of professor or associate professor of urology.
The department has particular expertise in diagnosis and treatment of urological malignancies, calculi and prostatic diseases. As the leader of endo-urology in Zhejiang Province, it pioneered ureteroscopic pneumatic and holmium laser lithotripsy. As the national leading technology, 1900 cases have been achieved with holmium laser enucleation of prostate since 2002, thus representing a remarkable advancement. The department also has also made advancements in laparoscopic urological surgery, such as laparoscopic prostatectomy and nephrectomy.

3 Research
Novel techniques, protocols and technical advances in urology are attributable, to some extent, to our research and development in this area. Our interest includes both translational research, and clinical research via interaction and collaboration with patients. Many of our laboratory discoveries have been translated into technological and therapeutic advances and integrated into clinical trials and patient care. The novel approach for prostate cancer treatment that department focuses on includes brachytherapy and hormonal therapy.
Urologists have published hundreds of clinical articles and research papers on surgical conditions and treatments, which act as a testimony for the department's long-standing commitment to medical inquiry.
